ABRCMS Student Travel Award

Deadline: Aug. 22, 2018

Are you an undergraduate or postbaccalaureate student and need funds to present at ABRCMS? Apply for the ABRCMS Student Travel Award! Full and partial awards will be given to outstanding student applicants. The full travel award covers conference registration, housing, and airfare, while the partial award covers one or any combination of these components.

Eligibility Requirements

 Prospective ABRCMS Student Travel Award applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident, and
  • Must be accepted to present a poster or oral presentation at ABRCMS 2018, and
  • Must be a full-time matriculated community college or undergraduate student at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education or a full-time postbaccalaureate student who fulfills at least ONE of the following characteristics:
    • From an underrepresented/underserved ethnicity/race (groups include Blacks or African-Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders), or
    • Currently enrolled at a community college and completed at least 30 credit hours, or o From a disadvantaged background (from a family with an annual income below established low-income thresholds or from an educational environment that inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to develop and participate in a research career), or
    • First generation college student, or
    • Non-traditional student (e.g. beginning post-secondary education at or after age 21, full-time employment, having dependents, taking longer than 6 years to complete a degree), or
    • U.S. military veteran, or
    • Individual with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities

Note: Eligible applicants cannot have travel support from any NIGMS funded programs nor be a previous ABRCMS presenter. Master's and doctoral level graduate students and postdoctoral scientists are not eligible to apply.

Application Requirements

A complete ABRCMS Student Travel Award application contains 3 parts:

  1. Student Travel Award application submission due by 11:59 PDT on Aug. 22nd
  2. Recommendation Form* uploaded by 11:59 PDT on Aug. 29th
  3. Abstract submission due by 11:59 by Sept. 7th

*A recommendation form will be emailed to your reference from abstractsonline.com on Thursday, Aug. 23. Your recommender must upload the completed form by Wednesday, Aug. 29. No exceptions will be made. It is your responsibility to confirm with your recommender that the email with the recommendation form was received and uploaded.

Review Criteria

All applications will be reviewed and evaluated by the following criteria:

  1. Academic achievement,
  2. Experience conducting independent work,
  3. Interest in biomedical and/or behavioral sciences, and
  4. Motivation to attend ABRCMS

Notification

You will receive an eNotification by early Oct. regarding the final status of your application.

Requirements of Accepted Awardees

As an ABRCMS Student Travel Awardee you will be held to a high standard. Your full participation in the conference is required. Awardees are required to attend the following:
  • Pre-conference webinar on presenting an oral/poster presentation
  • ABRCMS Travel Awardee Orientation
  • Undergraduate and Postbaccalaureate Student Orientation (Thursday, Nov. 15 at 8:00 am)
  • All conference sessions and activities
  • At least 9 of your peers’ poster presentations and one oral session

In addition, you must:

  • Present your poster/oral presentation at your assigned time
  • Participate in two post-conference surveys (the conference survey and one specific to the travel award program)
  • Stay for the entirety of the conference
  • Stay in assigned conference housing
  • Complete affirmation forms and book travel by assigned deadlines

ABRCMS Judge Travel Award

Deadline: July 20, 2018

Travel awards are available to postdoctoral scientists and faculty members, who are active researchers, to mentor students through participation in the ABRCMS Judging Program. First time ABRCMS judges have the opportunity to win a full or partial award to cover their participation in the conference, while returning judges have the opportunity to receive a partial award. Full awardees will be provided conference registration, airfare, and housing. Partial awardees may receive any of these components or a travel subsidy. Final award packages are determined based on the amount of revenue received at the time of the deadline.

Please note the award only funds travel within the United States and United States territories.

Eligibility Requirements

Prospective applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • Active researcher (must spend at least 25% of time conducting research) in one of the twelve scientific disciplines represented at the conference
  • Postdoctoral scientist or research faculty member
  • Commitment to mentoring and diversity

Please note:

  • Federal employees cannot receive any funding or compensation (complimentary travel, hotel or registration) from ABRCMS and therefore are not eligible to apply
  • In addition, Program Directors from NIGMS funded programs, are also ineligible to apply 

Application Requirements

There are two different applications for the Judge Travel Award: (i) first time judges and (ii) returning judges.
 
First time judges should be prepared to answer the following: 
  • Describe your current area(s) scientific research (limit to 500 characters)
  • What your goals are for attending the conference and what you hope to accomplish by attending (limit to 500 characters)
  • Describe (a) an impactful mentoring experience (either one you had with a mentor or as a mentor), (b) your current mentoring activities, and (c) your commitment to diversity (limit to 1-page)
  • Describe your previous experience judging presentations (limit to 500 characters)

In addition, you will be asked to upload your current CV or NIH biosketch (limit to 2-pages).

Returning judges should be prepared to answer the following:

  • Describe (a) meaningful interactions have you had during past ABRCMS experiences, (b) how you stayed connected with other attendees you have met at ABRCMS, and (c) what you feel are the most important aspects of your role as a judge (limit to 1-page)
  • What your goals are for attending the conference and what you hope to accomplish by attending (limit to 500 characters)
  • Describe your current area(s) scientific research (limit to 500 characters)
  • Describe (a) an impactful mentoring experience (either one you had with a mentor or as a mentor), (b) your current mentoring activities, and (c) your commitment to diversity (limit to 1-page)

In addition, you will be asked to upload your current CV or NIH biosketch (limit to 2-pages)

Notification

In an effort to provide funds to as many individuals as possible, notification emails will not be sent until the beginning of September.
 

Requirements of Accepted Awardees

Awardees are required to:

  • Review ABRCMS Student Travel Award applications (August 31-September 6)
  • Attend all pre-conference and on-site judging training, including:
    • Judges Orientation Webinar held in Oct.
    • Mandatory Judges Meeting held Thursday, Nov. 15 at 8:00 am
  • Be available to judge all poster and oral sessions (must arrive on Wednesday, Nov. 14 and stay until 2 pm on Saturday, Nov. 17)
  • Actively engage in the conference by attending sessions, mentoring students, and networking with peers
